UEL Townhall Meeting: Discuss the NDP’s proposed School Surtax

When: May 10, 2018 @ 7:00pm

Where: Suite #300 – 5755 Dalhousie Road (above the Starbucks)

Dear Neighbours,

You may be aware that the NDP government intends to make changes to our property taxes for 2019.   They are calling this change the School Surtax.  It is meaningful for anyone whose residence is assessed above 3 million.  The majority of single-family home owners on the West side of Vancouver will be affected.

Many neighbours in the UEL believe this tax to be an unfair burden on people whose homes may have wildly increased in value, simply by virtue of being in a particular area.  There are countless people who do not have the means to afford these significant increases, such as seniors, and families who may have purchased before such massive assessments occurred.  In addition, aside from the name, there has been nothing to suggest that the revenue from this tax will directly benefit schools, rather than going into general revenue.

As such, we are organizing to resist the implementation of this tax.  We will be having a community meeting on May 10 at 7pm.  Please join us to share your point of view.

You can see how you and your neighbours may be affected in 2019 below:

4 million $8,550 $2,000 extra $10,550
5 million $10,685 $6,000 extra $16,685
6 million $12,820 $10,000 extra $22,820
7 million $14,955 $14,000 extra $28,955
8 million $17,090 $18,000 extra $35,090
9 million $19,230 $22,000 extra $41,230
10 million $21,365 $26,000 extra $47,365

*Note: your basic taxes are likely to increase
